A Scramble hike up Table Mountain
If you are looking for a really fun route up Table Mountain that is off the beaten tourist track and are not afraid of heights, then the India Venster route is the one for you.
The route starts at the lower cable way station and follows a route almost directly under the cable way for the first 3/4 of the way.
Much of the route is steep requiring the use of hands to get up and over obstacles but the rewards are so worth it. About 30 minutes into the hike it is worth taking a short detour to the “window”
In all the hike should take you around 3 hours. That is allowing plenty of time to enjoy the views. After the vester you continue up moving to the left and across the top of “India” (so called because between 2 buttresses is a triangle of green shaped a little like India) Then there are a few scrambles. They are relatively easy. You do need to be relatively fit and not afraid of heights. But no technical skill is needed at all.
The last 40 minutes to an hour of the hike takes you around the West side of the mountain so instead of views of Cape Town the views are of Camps Bay and the Atlantic.
Finally you pass a sign aptly stating “this is not an easy way down” and then reach the plateau from where it is an easy 5 minute cable car ride down.
