When you next visit Kirstenbosch Gardens take a look at Mandelas gold. This is a yellow Sterilitzia plant named in honour of President Mandela. The unusual golden yellow colour of the plant took 20 years of careful cross pollination to delevop.
A bust of Mr Mandela is found just inside the main entrance to the gardens along with a sample of this lovely plant. A plaque commemorating his visit to gardens quotes him as saying:
“I am happiest when I am in the wild because I can listen – as the poet says – in the still air music lies unheard in the rough mountains beauty’s height unseen”
