Hike up Platteklip Gorge

Platteklip Gorge remains one of the most popular hiking trails up Table Mountain. This is mainly due to the fact that this gorge is really the only straight hiking route up the North facing cliffs. ie The face of Table Mountain that over looks the city. It is also the quickest route to the cable car area and all the classic Table Mountain views.

The average time to hike up Platteklip Gorge is 2 hours. This allows quite a bit of time for breaks and enjoying the views. Hiking at a steady pace with few stops a relatively fit person can easily be at the top in 1.5 hours. Be warned however, this is a steep route well described as an unrelenting staircase. Very cardio vascular and tough on the legs.

Although a straight forward route. Platteklip gorge is a steep route that will work your heart and lungs

The route zig zags up a clear gorge that narrows as you reach the top. Here it really is spectacular as right at the top you can almost touch both sides of the gorge with your outstretched arms.

Finally at the top a right turn will take you up a last little climb and you are onto the plateau 10 minutes from the cable car.
