A walking tour of Cape Town with Footsteps to freedom may not be as tiring as a hike on Table Mountain. It is however, a wonderful way to explore Cape Town and learn her chequered history in an unforgettable way.
The tour itself takes about 2 hours. Starting at one end of St Georges Mall where you are introduced to a piece of the Berlin Wall. Did you know we had this in the city? I certainly didn’t.
The parallels between Germany and South Africa may not be immediately obvious, until you realise the timing of the release of Mandela and the falling of the Berlin wall.
The tour continues to Greenmarket square and on through the city passing many buildings and statues of huge historical significance. Your guide talks you through the history of the Cape.
The tour introduces important occurrences such as the arrival of the Dutch, slavery and the clearance of district six, as well as discussing figures such as Cecil John Rhodes, Jan Smuts, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
Ending with a stroll through the magnificent company gardens, this is a wonderful tour for anyone wanting to get to grips with the history of the Cape and how it fits in to the wider South African context.
