Each year the cable car closes for essential maintenance and this year it will be closed between July 22nd and August 25th.

Do not despair however. This closure certainly does not mean you cannot experience all the wonderful views for which Table Mountain and Cape Town are famous.

There are numerous routes you can choose from to hike up the mountain instead. From the steep but relatively simple Platteklip Gorge to the more technical India Venster. Or why not try Skeleton Gorge or Kasteelspoort. All these routes will take anyone of moderate fitness right to the top of the mountain from where you can enjoy those world famous views at your leisure.

And if you don’t have the time for the hike (you will need a minimum of 4 hours to hike up, enjoy the views and hike back down) there is always Lions Head. You can be up and down here in 2 hours and the views from the top are magnificent.

So if you are planning a visit to Cape Town whilst the cable car is closed, book a hike up Table Mountain. Believe me, you will never want to ride up again.
