2 day hike on Table Mountain
Spending 2 days hiking and spending the night on Table Mountain is really the best way to experience Table Mountain. Enjoy a sundowner in the peace and quiet of a wilderness and then experience a wonderful sunrise over False Bay. Nothing can beat it.
The Overseers Cottage on Table Mountain is found on the Back Table close to the De Villiers Reservoir. This is an old redeveloped cottage from the original development of the reservoirs on the top of the mountain. Do not think you will be roughing it here! Thick sandstone walls that insulate against both the heat and cold allow it to be cozy during the winter but cool in the summer. Equipped with comfortable beds and mattresses, with a fully kitted out kitchen. This accomodation is more than comfortable.
While your food and overnight gear is transferred to the top up the handy jeep track. Those not feeling energetic can stroll up the jeep track in less than 2 hours, whilst those wanting a challenging strenuous hike can choose from any number of routes.
Last week I guided a family from the cable car along Smuts Track to the cottage.(we cheated and rode up in the cable car) This took us 4 hours and although a good amount of excercise was certainly not exhausting. This route enjoys the classic Table Mountain views of the city from the cable car area, then the wonderful 360 degree views from Maclears Beacon (the highest point of the mountain) before heading South and seeing the entire mountain chain spreading out ahead of us.
As it is August (winter in the Cape) on arrival we quickly got the inside fire going and were soon relaxing with a game of 30 seconds before supper. After an early night we were up early to do a circuit of the dams and visit the waterworks museum.
We descended the mountain into Kirstenbosch where we enjoyed a late and delicious lunch at the restaurant.
