Markers and plaques found on Table

 Mountain hiking trails

There are a number of markers and plaques to be found on Table Mountain’s hiking trails. Some are to help you navigate or direct you away from dangerous areas. Others are in memorial to regular mountain walkers or to provide information on the ecology on Table Mountain.

Here are a few of things to look out for on your next hike on Table Mountain.

The picture above is of a “trailhead” These are found at a number of points on the mountain and indicate the popular hiking paths, and indicate the estimated hiking times between points.

Slangholie ravine overlooking the Atlantic ocean is an extremely steep and dangerous gorge. This sign warns the uninformed hiker away from this route.

The memorial to Jan Smuts

Close to Maclears Beacon you will find the memorial to Jan Christiaan Smuts. (1870-1950) This remarkable gentleman who features throughout South African history is reputed to have walked from Skeleton Gorge to Maclears Beacon on a daily basis. Whether or not this is true, he did love the mountain and hiking. Hence his memorial there.

Also close to Maclears Beacon is the mountain club war memorial. (pictured here with Devils Peak and Table Bay in the background)

Finally, surrounding the cableway and the Western Table there are a number of information boards concerning the history and ecology of Table Mountain.

Of course, you don’t need to hike up Table Mountain in order to see the above information board. The Table Mountain cafe is found about a 1 minute stroll from the cable car.
