The India Venster route up Table
Mountain
The India Venster route on Table mountain is probably one of the most well known. This due to the fact that it is often in the news.
In the past 5 years it has claimed 6 lives, whilst numerous people have been injured or lost on it.
However, if you are with an experienced person, are quite fit, and happy to use your hands to scramble up a few rocky places it really is a fantastic route
Although not requiring ropes this is not a route for anyone looking for a straight forward hike or anyone with a fear of heights.
Starting at the lower cable way the route takes you straight up the mountain pretty much under the cable car most of the way. Just before the top the route then takes you around the side of the mountain above Camps Bay. You pop up just the other side from Platteklip gorge.
The name comes from the shape of the gorge. (from the cable way looking up it is shaped like India) and a window that is formed between two rocks with a third wedged on top. (venster is Afrikaans for window)
So if you are adventurous, find yourself a guide and rather take this route than Platteklip gorge.
