Walks around the top of Table
Mountain
One of the nice things about Table Mountain is that you can cheat a bit!!
If you don’t feel like a steep climb to the top you can take the cable car up and begin your walk from the top!!
The cable car ride itself is quite an experience. With 360 degree views and a rotating floor to make sure everyone gets to see all angles. Once at the top you can choose from a stroll around the paved tourist area, or you can go for a really good hike covering some distance but with most of the hard work aready over.
Only 15 minutes from the cable car you already begin to leave the crowds behind. An hours flat walk will bring you to Maclears beacon. 19 metres higher than the cable way this is the highest point on Table mountain.
From here there are numerous walks one can take. Along Smuts track above the Southern suburbs and down the mountain at Constantia Nek. Or through echo valley and down Kasteels Poort on the Camps Bay side. Both these routes should take around 4 to 5 hours to complete. Both routes will take you on quiet paths through beautiful fynbos and with magnificent views.
Alternatively, you could do a circuit of the dams and visit the waterworks museum. Then return to the cableway and get the cable car down again. This route should also take 4 to 5 hours.
The back of Table Mountain is still unspoilt and undeveloped. You can wander for the whole day and see only very few other hikers. The pristine fynbos is colourful and the numerous small stream clear and clean. The dams, although obviously man made add to the beauty of the area.
So, even if you feel you are not fit, or not energetic enough to climb Table mountain. Try a hike on the top.
