Best quick walk on Table Mountain: Lions Head
Enjoy a hike up Lions Head
A quick walk up Lions Head is really one of the best value for energy walks on the Table Mountain chain. You can at the top in less than an hour but have also had quite a work out getting there. For Capetonians its a popular before or after work walk. Its also very popular as a sundowner spot. You can watch the sunset over the Atlantic whilst the moon rises over False Bay. Don’t forget a torch if you do go in the evening though, as to come down in the dark without one would be very tricky.
Lions Head, is the “sugar loaf ” mountain beside the main table. Its shape is said to resemble a lions head, and signal hill, the lions rump. I’ve never really seen it but apparently the resamblance is there!!
Although there are several routes to the top there are 2 main ones. One is a straight forward path that spirals around the mountain. There are one or 2 small scrambles but otherwise very easy. The other route involves some scrambling up some chains. But even then no real exposure or difficult stretches.
On both routes it is necessary to climb a 3 metre ladder just before reaching the top. The ladder is at a good angle and really offers no major obstruction.
Once at the top the views are magnificent. A 360 view encompassing Camps Bay, Sea Point, The city Bowl, Table Mountain, The southern suburbs. Truly an amazing sight. Well worth the climb, and certainly worth relaxing and enjoying for a time.
